Hoop Along–Applique Part Three

applique_step9This week it's all about design placement. Those of you with the super-duper large hoops, well you can simply stitch applique design ha00d_01 and you are done. The rest need to combine the smaller designs to create the large applique poppy embroidery. Sound difficult? Well it's not, especially since I have a design placement guide for you; it is included with your applique poppy embroidery designs. Just in case you can’t find it click here for a copy. This document includes a guide for the 4"x4" (100x100mm) Standard hoop and one for the 5"x7" (180x130mm) Design hoop.

If you haven't already done so, go ahead and print the design placement guide. Assemble the pieces as described on page one of the document - it tells you how to print and assemble the pages. Once you have that done, come back and continue reading.fade_away_marker

Cut a piece of background fabric. The size of the background fabric will depend on where and how you are using the appliqué poppy design. But to allow for hooping ease the background fabric needs to be at least 12” x 13”. Measure and mark the center lines on the right side of the background fabric. I generally use a fade away marker. I know that some people are a little hesitant about using fade or wash away markers, but I’ve never had any problem with these markers. I have used them on a variety of linen, cotton, wool and silk with good results. If you still feel a little cautious, then do a test marking on a small piece of your fabric to make sure.

Center the design placement guide onto the right side of the fabric. Using the fade away marker, transfer the design placement markings onto the right side of the fabric.

Cut a 12” x 13” piece of tear away stabilizer. Spray one side of the stabilizer with the temporary adhesive spray. Center it onto the wrong side of the fabric, sticky side of stabilizer to wrong side of fabric, finger press to adhere.

Place the inner hoop over design placement marking #1; match the markings on the inner hoop with the markings on the fabric. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer.

Put the hoop into position onto your embroidery sewing machine and stitch out the design indicated for your hoop on your design placement guide (ha001d_02 or ha001d_04). If you need a refresher click here to go to Hoop Along – Appliqué Part Two to stitch the appliqué.

5x7_hoop_step3Repeat at placement marking #2. At this point those using the 5"x7" (180x130mm) Design hoop, congrats you are done!

Those of you using the 4"x4" (100x100mm) Standard hoop, you have 4x4_hoop_step3three more designs to stitch, one each at placement markings #3, #4 and #5. Then you too are done.

Some of you may be thinking this placement guide is fine and dandy for this design, but what do you do when you don’t have a design placement guide  and you want to combine several embroideries? The answer is quite simple, use embroidery placement templates. I will cover that topic next week, so come back.
