As promised here is the Valentine’s Bunting tutorial. You can download the embroidery designs here. The download contains three designs; the X and O flags and a blank flag for you to design. Have fun.
Sewing retailers, yes you can use this for embroidery club or a class. The only thing I ask is that you send your customers to my site to download their own designs.
Here is what you need:
Eight strips of organza large enough to fit your 4”x4” (100x100mm) hoop
Four 4” squares of cotton solid: flag
Four 3” squares of cotton print: letter
40wt rayon thread in desired colors
Embroidery bobbin thread*
30” length of 3/8” wide satin ribbon
Temporary adhesive spray
Buttonhole cutter and mat
Bent embroidery scissors
* If the bunting will be seen from both sides, then be sure to use a matching bobbin thread. Alternatively you could use a matching rayon thread in the bobbin.
Hoop two layers of organza and stitch out the first color. Normally I would use organza in a matching color. In this case I used white so that the stitching shows up in the pictures.
Spray the back of a 4” square with the temporary adhesive spray. Place fabric into a small cardboard box when spraying with temporary adhesive spray. Otherwise you'll have sticky everything.
Center the fabric over the stitch out in the hoop and finger press to secure. Stitch the next color. This secures the fabric in the hoop. By the way no need to change thread colors. The thread stops are in place only to stop the stitching process to complete the appliqué.
Remove the hoop from your embroidery sewing machine, but do not remove the fabric from the hoop. Trim close to stitching.
Stitch the next two colors. These stitch out the satin stitch edge on the flag and the mark out for the letter. Follow the steps above to stitch out the appliqué letter.
Stitch the final two colors to complete the buttonholes. Then, from the wrong side run a bead of seam sealant down the center of the buttonholes. Let dry.
This is what the back of the flag looks like if you don’t use a matching bobbin thread.
Cut the buttonholes open using the buttonhole cutter and cutting mat.
Heat up the stencil cutter. Rub the pointed tip of the stencil cutter along the satin edge to cut away the organza.
Embroider another three flags so that you have two X’s and two O’s. Thread the ribbon through the buttonholes and hang.
